Develop, document, and implement standards and processes impacting the reliable operation of the utility.

Create specifications and design details for transmission, distribution, substation and protection projects, as assigned.

SALARY RANGE: $56,600 – $102,470 (Base salary is determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

LOCATION: Rapid City, SD

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Transmission & Distribution Engineering Manager

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Engineer and design electric system projects and upgrades.
  • Develop and coordinate equipment standards and reliability programs for utility compliance activities and requirements.
  • Manage electrical construction projects including site work, equipment installation and maintenance activities.
  • Provide support to other technical groups.
  • Direct field personnel and contractors in the installation, verification, and upgrade of transmission and distribution equipment.
  • Support system operations and planning personnel in documenting compliance programs and procedures.
  • Support transmission line maintenance work through aerial line patrols and leading remediation efforts as needed.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist and support the other engineering and maintenance activities within the department.
  • Provide project management and administration activities for assigned work.
  • Support safety, diversity, and social responsibility goals of the department, business unit and corporation.
  • Contribute to the creation of department budgets and financial tracking activities.
  • Participate in industry standards development processes.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Perform work in a team environment and provide direct support to other utility operational groups.
  • Establish professional relationships and work effectively with other departments, utilities, consultants and government agencies.
  • Supervise technical and craft personnel in construction and maintenance activities.

EXPERIENCE:

At least one year of utility engineering experience preferred.
Utility engineering or related power field experience preferred.
Transmission or distribution line design experience using PLS-CADD or other software preferred.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.

KNOWLEDGE:

Working knowledge of utility transmission system design philosophy and equipment operation.
Understanding of electric transmission drawings and schematics.

SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and the ability to interact in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves.
  • Skills in leadership and participation in cross functional utility teams.
  • Strong ability to document and track projects and work goals.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires limited travel within the utility service territory and for support of corporate subsidiaries.
  • Perform work on or in close proximity to energized electrical facilities.
